About Me Appointment

Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates body activities. It has two major divisions:

Central nervous system: the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system: all other neural elements, such as eyes, ears, skin, and other "sensory receptors"

A doctor who specializes in neurology is called a neurologist. The neurologist treats disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, such as:

Cerebrovascular disease, such as stroke
Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis Headache disorders
Infections of the brain and peripheral nervous system
Movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease
Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)
Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy
Spinal cord disorders
Speech and language disorders

Neurologists do not perform surgery. If one of their patients requires surgery, they refer them to a neurosurgeon.

The department of Neurology at Emirates Hospital is dedicated to exceptional patient care, cutting-edge scientific research, and outstanding medical education. Multidisciplinary, comprehensive care is standard in our department, and is made possible in particular by highly-trained and qualified teams.

Neurophysiology diagnostic care is an integral part of many clinical pathways for patients with problems and conditions that affect the functioning of the brain, nervous system, and muscles. The contribution of clinical neurophysiology services in end–to-end patient pathways is immensely significant

Information For Patients

Clinical applications of Neurophysiological Investigations

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) : Involve electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves with recording of responses from nerves and muscles. It is used to investigate, for example, focal neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome and other causes of numbness, tingling, and pain in the limbs.

Electromyography (EMG) :

Investigate the causes of muscle weakness and a variety of disorders affecting the nervous system. Combining the EMG and NCS often improves diagnostic accuracy.

Evoked Potential Studies (EPS) – Visual (VEP), Auditory (AEP), Somatosensory (SSEP):

Evoked potentials are potentials produced by the brain in response to specific stimuli, for example, a flashing light or sound.
